Ebb and Flow Hydroponic System

Ebb and Flow is known for its reliability, simple to operate and low cost to get into. Ebb and Flow is a hydroponics setup literally anyone can setup and run with little knowledge of hydroponics. There are a few Ebb and Flow designs that growers tend to gravitate to.

The two most popular Ebb and Flow designs are:

  • The Ebb and Flow Bucket System
  • The Ebb and Flow Tray System
The concept is the same for both Ebb and Flow designs. Water floods the Tray/Buckets and then drains back to the reservoir.

Feeding in Ebb and Flow Systems

In a Ebb and Flow Hydroponic system the Nutrients are delivered to the plants when the system floods. Once in a flooded state the water fills the growing medium. Depending on the growing medium and how long it retains the water and nutrients will determine how many times you need to flood the system.

Aeration in Ebb and Flow Systems

Ebb and Flow Hydroponic systems have a distinct advantage of not having to oxygenate the feeding solution. This is due to the fact that the roots are not constantly sitting in the feeding solution. Oxygen is introduced to the roots as the feeding solution drains from the growing medium.

Drawbacks to Ebb and Flow Systems

There are a few drawbacks to Ebb and Flow systems that need to be said. While these are small it still needs to be stated.

Here are some:

  • Possibility of Root Rot
  • Possibility of PH Issues in the Reservoir
  • Drainage issues
All these Ebb and Flow system issues can be mitigated throw these means:
  • Root Rot can be mitigated by using a product like Hygrozyme
  • PH is really only a issue for people that do not keep a eye on their systems. So keep a eye on it and make sure you regulate the PH in your feeding solution. If all else fails and you can't get it right, empty the reservoir and start over.
  • For the Ebb and Flow bucket system you can put down some rocks at the bottom of the bucket so your plants sit above the little bit of solution left over from the drain. In a Ebb and Flow tray system you can prop up the tray on one side so it flows better to the drain. In both systems make sure you have nothing blocking the drainage holes.

The Ebb and Flow system is a wildly used and simple hydroponic system. For your next grow build or [adrotate banner="31"] one of these systems and enjoy the ride.
