Cloning is the process of taking a cutting from your marijuana plant and getting that cutting to grow into a full grown marijuana plant. This is not a hard thing to do but it does require some patience and understanding of how to do it. In this article we will get into the process and break it down step by step so you can reap the benifits from cloning. After you read this and practice you will be a cloning master.

Preperations Before First Cut

Things you will need before you start the cloning process:

  • Sharp Scissors
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Glass of Water
  • Thin Sharp Razor Blade or Knife
  • Growing Medium
  • Plastic Cups
  • Cloning Rooting Gel Like Clonex
  • And of Course a Plant to Cut

Take all these and find a good place to sit for the cloning process. Remember to Clean all your cutting tools with the rubbing alcohol. You do not want to start the cloning process with dirty tools. Doing so can introduce issues to your clones from the start.

Taking The Clones

Once you have everything ready you can start the cloning process. Grab your scissors and go to your plants. When you are going to take a cut you want to cut from the bottom of the plant. This is the area that will grow the fastest and give you the best bet in the cloning of your plant.

So grab a bottom branch and position your scissors underneath the branch facing up at a 45 degree angle then cut. When you cut do it at the node or right before. Make sure the clone is at least 3 inches in length. Take great care not to crush the stem of the clone. After you cut the clone place it in the glass of water cut side down. Now continue to get as many cuts as you want/need for this cloning session.

Planting The Clones

Now that you have all your Clones and your feeling good about the cloning session so far. It is time to start planting these little girls. There are a few thing to do and consider when you start this part of the cloning process.

Depending on the growing medium being used, you will want to make sure it is going to be free from any kind of nutrients. So you will need to flush the growing medium several times regardless of how neutral your growing medium is. To do this just grab some R/O water or Distilled water and run it through several times. We are looking for a 90% runoff at this point.

Since Cloning is very traumatic for the clones you will want to complete this part of the cloning process fairly quickly. The faster the clone goes from water cup to growing medium and under the lights will only help the little girls on their journey to your jar.

To start grab a clone from the water glass and hold it cut side up. You will see that it kind of looks like a old school ink pen(quill). You want to take your razor/knife and cut straight down the center of the 45degree cut. You want to take this cut down about a inch to inch and a half. Then dip the cut side of the clone in the rooting gel and place it into the center of the cup of growing medium and set it to the side.

That is pretty much all there is to the cloning process. Now repeat the cloning process for all the clones. Once you have them all done get them under the lights. The light should be on 24 hours a day for the first few weeks of the clones life.

Feeding is not necessary for the first week or so as the nutrients could burn up your little girls. Just trust that the rooting gel is going to provide all that it needs. You could after the first week add some hydroplex at 5ml a gallon. This will help the roots grow stronger, but please wait a week since a fresh cut does not have roots yet.

Rooting should happen between 1 to 3 weeks. Usually the leaves will yellow a bit, that is a good indication the clones have roots. At this point you need to follow a feeding schedule and begin feeding them.
